REMEDIATION PARK: APLICATION OF PLASMA TECHNOLOGY AS SOLUTIONS FOR TOFU INDUSTRIAL WASTE WATER TREATMENT

Total tofu industry in Indonesia in 2010 reached 84,000 business units spread across major cities and the countryside. With a production capacity of more than 2.56 million tons per year, tofu industry produces wastewater as much as 20 million cubic meters per year. Most tofu industry in Indonesia that there is a small and medium-scale industries are not managing their waste properly. Currently tofu manufacturing in Indonesia are still using simple technology, so that the level of efficient use of resources (water and raw materials) are still very low and very high levels of waste production by tofu industrial effluent concentration of hydrogen ions this tends to be acidic with a pH of 4-5, the acidity will be loosed substances volatile. The largest component of tofu wastewater is protein (N-total) amounted 226, 06 to 434, 78 mg/L. So that the entry of liquid waste out into the aquatic environment will increase the total nitrogen in the water. Gas commonly found in wastewater are Oxygen, Hydrogen sulphide, ammonia, carbon dioxide, and methane. These gases derived from the decomposition of organic materials contained in wastewater which emit a foul odor. Previously solutions were using the method of physico-chemical, biological aerobic, and utilization of aquatic weeds. However, the application of these three methods in real scale, especially Indonesia is relatively difficult for several reasons, among others, the method and the relatively complex operation, needs a large amount of coagulant. While the aerobic biological wastewater treatment require electrical energy to power the high aeration, as well as the processing of a relatively wide area. Thus, the tofu industry often dispose the wastewater into water bodies without prior treatment. Therefore use of plasma technology with innovation remediation park. Plasma technology is included in green technology because it doesn’t use chemicals and the treatment technology is faster, doesn’t require large tracts of land and environmentally friendly. Plasma technology for treating wastewater has many advantages compared with conventional means, microbiology and membrane filtration. The process of decomposition of organic compounds by plasma takes place very rapidly and the active species can decompose almost all organic compounds contained in wastewater. In addition, remediation park provide a solution on the efficiency so that the combination of plasma technology in tofu wastewater treatment and remediation park is a promising solution for wastewater treatment tofu industry in Indonesia.
